Moving your history from another app
Odobook reads exports from the Fuelly website, the Fuelly iPhone app and aCar. Everything is read on your phone; nothing is uploaded. Before anything is saved you see a preview where you can pick which vehicles to bring in, rename them, set their units, and merge them into a vehicle you already have.
From the Fuelly website
- On fuelly.com, open your vehicle's Log Book and choose Export Fuel-ups. You get a file called
fuelups.csv. If you logged services, choose Export Services too (services.csv). - Save the files to your phone, for example in Files, iCloud Drive or Google Drive.
- In Odobook, go to Settings → Import from another app → Choose files and pick both files together.
Fuelly's website sometimes dates a fill-up one day late when it was logged in the evening. If Odobook spots that, the preview offers to fix those dates.
From the Fuelly iPhone app
In the Fuelly app, email yourself the CSV report. It's one file, usually named Fuelly Export.csv, with all your vehicles. Save it to Files and choose it in Odobook as above. This file doesn't say which units you used, so the preview asks.
From aCar
aCar saves its full backups as a file ending in .abp, in the aCar folder on your phone. Make a fresh backup in aCar, copy the file to the phone where Odobook is if that's a different phone (Google Drive works well), then choose it in Odobook. Fill-ups, services, units and vehicle details come across. aCar's expenses and notes don't have a place in Odobook yet, and the preview tells you how many are left out.
Good to know
- Importing the same file again adds nothing: records already in Odobook are skipped.
- MPG is recalculated from your fill-ups, never copied from the file, so every number follows the same rules.
- A file Odobook doesn't recognize is turned away without changing anything. If your export isn't read, send it to us and we'll look at it.
Backups and moving to a new phone
- On the old phone, go to Settings → Backup → Back up to a file. It makes one file with every vehicle, fill-up, service and reminder.
- Save it somewhere you can reach from the new phone: iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or email it to yourself.
- On the new phone, install Odobook, tap Bring your data in on the first screen (or Settings → Restore a backup) and choose the file.
A restore replaces what's on the phone with the backup, so Odobook shows what the file holds and asks before it does anything. Backups are made only when you ask, so make one every so often; Settings shows the date of your last one.
To move between iPhone and Android, use the same steps. The backup file works on both.
Service reminders
A reminder can repeat by distance (every 5,000 mi), by time (every 6 months) or both, whichever comes first. It counts from the last time you logged that job. On the vehicle's page each reminder shows when it's next due, and tapping Log it records the service and restarts the count.
Odobook notifies you in the morning of the day a reminder falls due. For distance, it estimates that day from how much you've been driving lately, so keep logging fill-ups and the estimate stays close.
If a notification doesn't arrive:
- Check that notifications are allowed for Odobook in your phone's settings.
- On Android, battery savers on some phones stop apps from showing scheduled notifications. Set Odobook's battery use to unrestricted.
- After changing the phone's date or time zone, open Odobook once so it can schedule the reminders again.
How MPG is worked out
Odobook uses the full-tank method. It measures the distance between two fill-ups where you filled the tank, and divides it by all the fuel you added in between, including partial fills. That's the most accurate figure a fuel log can give.
- Turn off Filled the tank for a partial fill. Its fuel is counted in the next full-tank figure.
- Turn on Missed a fill-up before this if you forgot to log one. Odobook then doesn't calculate across the gap, so a missing fill-up can't inflate your MPG.
Your data
Your log stays on your phone. There's no account and nothing to sign in to. You can export fill-ups and the service log as CSV files any time from Settings, which open in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. Deleting the app deletes the log, so make a backup first if you might want it back. Read the privacy policy for the details.
