How to Use Interlock

Interlock builds grids of interlocking pieces that are also editable Canva frames. Open it from your Canva Apps panel and pick a mode:

Puzzle mode — blank frames: Choose your columns and rows, then add the grid to your design. Each interlocking piece is an empty frame — drag a different photo into any piece to fill it.
Puzzle mode — from a photo: Select an image on your canvas (or upload one) and Interlock slices it into a true interlocking jigsaw. Columns and rows auto-fit your photo's shape so nothing is stretched.
Frame mode: Turn a single image with a transparent background into one custom frame shape, then drop any photo into it.
Tip: After adding a puzzle, ungroup it to move or scatter the individual pieces — the layout stays fully editable, never a flattened image.

Tips for Best Results

Pick a grid that fits your photo: In "from a photo" mode the columns and rows are pre-set to keep pieces close to square. You can adjust them — fewer, larger pieces read more clearly at small sizes.

Use transparent backgrounds for Frame mode: Frame mode traces the visible (opaque) area of your image, so remove the background first for a clean frame outline.

Adjust precision (Frame mode): Use the precision slider to control detail. Higher precision captures more, but very intricate shapes may be simplified to stay within Canva's shape path limits. Start with Default and increase if needed.

Swap photos any time: Because every piece is a real Canva frame, you can drag in a new photo, replace it, or reposition it later — the same way you edit any frame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Interlock free?

Yes, Interlock is completely free with no hidden costs, subscriptions, or premium features.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. All image processing happens locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device.

What's the difference between the puzzle pieces and a normal photo jigsaw?

Interlock's pieces are editable drop-target frames, not a flattened picture. You can drop a different photo into each piece, swap them, and rearrange the layout — it stays an interactive template.

My photo looks stretched in the puzzle.

Use the "from a photo" mode, which auto-fits the columns and rows to your image's aspect ratio. If you changed the grid manually, try the suggested values to keep pieces close to square.

Why is my traced frame not detailed enough? (Frame mode)

Try increasing the precision slider. If the shape is very complex, Interlock may simplify it to stay within Canva's 2KB path limit. A smaller source image (under 500px) also helps.

The app says my design type is not supported. What do I do?

Interlock uses shape and frame elements, which are not available in Canva Docs. Open a regular design (poster, presentation, social media post, etc.) to use Interlock.
